Werewolf Game Rules: The Complete Guide
Werewolf (also known as Mafia) is the ultimate social deduction party game. Hidden roles, strategic deception, and heated debates make every game unique. Learn the rules, master the strategies, and become the most cunning player at the table.

What is Werewolf?
A social deduction game where villagers must identify hidden werewolves before it's too late
Werewolf is a party game for 7-15+ players that pits an informed minority (the werewolves) against an uninformed majority (the villagers). Created by Dimitry Davidoff in 1986 as "Mafia," the game gained its werewolf theme in 1997 and has since become one of the world's most popular social deduction games.
The Werewolf Team
Werewolves know each other's identities and secretly kill one villager each night. Their goal is to eliminate villagers until werewolves equal or outnumber the remaining players. They must blend in during day discussions to avoid detection.
The Village Team
Villagers don't know anyone's role at the start. They must use discussion, deduction, and special role abilities to identify the werewolves. The village wins by eliminating all werewolves through the daily voting process.
How the Game Works
Werewolf alternates between night (secret actions) and day (public discussion and voting)
Night Phase
When darkness falls, special roles act in secret
The Guard chooses one player to protect from werewolf attack (cannot protect the same player twice in a row)
Werewolves silently agree on one victim. If multiple wolves, they must reach consensus.
The Witch can save the victim with her antidote or poison another player. Each potion can only be used once per game.
The Seer chooses one player and learns their true alignment (werewolf or villager).
Day Phase
Survivors discuss, debate, and vote to eliminate suspects
The moderator announces who died during the night. Their role may or may not be revealed depending on rules.
On Day 1, players can run for Sheriff. The Sheriff's vote counts as 1.5 votes and they can transfer the badge upon death.
Each player speaks in order, sharing information, accusations, and defenses. This is where the real game happens!
Players vote to eliminate one person. The player with the most votes is eliminated. Ties may trigger a runoff.
Standard Roles in Werewolf
Each role has unique abilities that shape the game's strategic landscape

Werewolf
The core antagonists. Werewolves know each other and choose one victim to kill each night. They must deceive the village during the day to survive.

Seer
The village's most powerful information gatherer. Each night, the Seer learns one player's true alignment, but must share this info carefully.

Witch
A powerful role with two one-time-use potions. The antidote saves the wolf's victim, while the poison eliminates any player of her choice.

Hunter
A vengeful role that gets the last laugh. When eliminated by voting or wolf attack, the Hunter can immediately shoot and kill one player.

Guard
The village's protective shield. Each night, the Guard chooses one player to protect from the werewolf attack, but cannot guard the same person consecutively.
Villager
The backbone of the village. While Villagers have no special abilities, their votes and deduction skills are crucial to identifying werewolves.
Victory Conditions
Understanding how each team wins is essential for strategic play
Village Victory
Good triumphs over evil
The village team wins when all werewolves have been eliminated. This can happen through:
- โขDay voting - Successfully identifying and eliminating werewolves
- โขWitch's poison - Killing a werewolf with the poison potion
- โขHunter's shot - Shooting the last werewolf upon death
Werewolf Victory
Darkness consumes the village
Werewolves win when they equal or outnumber the remaining villagers. Examples:
- โข2 wolves vs 2 villagers = Wolf victory (parity achieved)
- โข1 wolf vs 1 villager = Wolf victory (equal numbers)
- โข3 wolves vs 2 villagers = Wolf victory (outnumbered)
Standard Game Configuration

The Sheriff Badge System
An important mechanic that adds strategic depth to the game
Sheriff Powers
Leadership with responsibility
- 1Weighted Vote: The Sheriff's vote counts as 1.5 votes during elimination, giving them significant influence.
- 2Badge Transfer: When the Sheriff dies, they can pass the badge to any living player, or destroy it.
- 3Speaking Order: The Sheriff often decides who speaks first and the direction of speeches.
Sheriff Election Process
After the first night, players can choose to run for Sheriff. Running is optional.
Candidates give speeches explaining why they should be Sheriff and may share role information.
All players vote. The candidate with the most votes becomes Sheriff. Ties may trigger runoffs.
